Still Waiting
Today, I had a follow up appointment with the reproductive endocrinologist, also known as a fertility, or infertility doctor. When I booked the appointment, I was told that it was an overlapping appointment so I would probably have to wait awhile. I prepared, and brought a coffee, muffin, some checks to write out, and 2 books. I read a magazine article in the waiting room and tried to eat the muffin but it sucked. I read a story by Jamie Oliver's wife, Jools, and her difficulties getting pregnant. She's written a book. I don't currently plan on reading it as 1) it got a crappy review and 2) I don't plan on getting pregnant any time soon and don't really feel like reading about it, given that my uterus is going to be sliced open in a few months, and a baby isn't going to be picked out of it.
So, after getting some book referrals from my doctor (book reports to follow after I've read them!), we got down to the real matter at hand. I've decided to take the Depo Lupron shot in preparation for a myomectomy. Actually, 3 shots, once every 28 days. He wrote me a prescription. I have to get it filled at the pharmacy, then go to the doctor's office to have a nurse give it to me. I'm starting with one monthly shot. For the second shot, I could get a 3 month on if I'm not too miserable with the side effects, or continue with the monthly ones. I have a follow up appointment in 2 months and then supposedly, pre-op in 10 weeks. I don't have an appointment for that yet. I think I have to call in the morning to figure out if I should have scheduled that when I was there or wait for them to call me.
There's a slight by improbably chance that the shot will shrink the fibroid enough that it could be removed by entering the uterus through the cervix. This is a slight chance, since the largest fibroid is the size of a softball. Yes, that's right, a softball. 10 centimeters at its largest.
Good news: the doc said that the Rx is very expensive and sometimes the pharmacy has to call the insurance company to get it approved. Not for me! It went right through and the pharmacist said it was no charge to me. The actual cost of the medicine is close to $600!! And I need this filled 3 times. Thank god for health insurance.
Other news: the doctor looked up my throat ultrasound results today and told me that the radiologist said it's inconclusive: there are things there, and they could be benign colloidal(?) cysts or they could be bad. They won't know unless they actually take a sample. The radiologist recommends a procedure to get a sample. I got a message from my primary care saying he had my results and that he'd just talk to me tomorrow but I don't have an appointment tomorrow. It's Thursday. So I have to call them tomorrow too.
Final note: Someone today said to me: where were you this morning. I said I had a doctor's appointment. He said: "Ihope everything's okay", and said: Do you have cancer? As a joke of course, but given the unknowns in my life, not really funny. I don't know. Maybe I do. Maybe I don't. What if I did and I said, "Actually yes I do."? If I did, would I have lied? Maybe.
